How to Use Garmin POI Loader: A Step-by-Step Guide Garmin GPS devices come preloaded with millions of points of interest (POIs) like gas stations, restaurants, and hotels. However, these built-in databases might miss niche locations, custom safety cameras, or your specific business clients. Garmin POI Loader is a free desktop application that lets you upload your own custom POI lists directly to your compatible Garmin device.

Here is exactly how to format your files, configure the software, and transfer your custom locations. Phase 1: Prepare Your POI Files

Before opening the software, you must organize your custom locations into a specific file structure on your computer. Step 1: Create a Dedicated Folder

Create a single, empty folder on your desktop or hard drive. Name it something clear, such as Garmin Custom POIs. The POI Loader software reads entire folders, not individual files, so everything you want to transfer must live inside this single folder. Step 2: Format Your Location Data Garmin POI Loader accepts two primary file formats:

.CSV (Comma Separated Values): Best for manual creation using Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.

.GPX (GPS Exchange Format): Best if you are exporting data from mapping software or other GPS applications.

If you are creating a CSV file, open a spreadsheet program and organize your data into columns without any header rows. The columns must follow this exact order:

Column A (Longitude): Enter the longitude coordinate in decimal degrees (e.g., -94.74681).

Column B (Latitude): Enter the latitude coordinate in decimal degrees (e.g., 38.85512).

Column C (Name): Enter the name of the location. This will display on your Garmin screen.

Column D (Comments/Optional): Enter extra details like phone numbers, addresses, or notes.

Tip: Save the file as a “CSV (Comma Delimited) (.csv)” file.Step 3: Add Custom Icons and Audio (Optional)

You can customize how your POIs look and sound when you approach them on the road.

Custom Icons: Create or download a .bmp (bitmap) image. It must match the exact file name of your CSV/GPX file (e.g., MySights.csv and MySights.bmp). Keep the image size to 16×16 or 24×24 pixels.

Custom Audio Alerts: Create an audio file in .mp3 or .wav format. Name it identically to your data file (e.g., MySights.mp3). This audio will trigger when you approach the location. Phase 2: Run the Garmin POI Loader

With your folder fully prepared, you are ready to use the software. Step 1: Connect Your Device

Plug your Garmin GPS device into your computer using a compatible USB cable. Wait a few moments for your computer to recognize the device as a removable drive. Step 2: Launch the Software and Select the Destination Open the Garmin POI Loader application. Click Next on the welcome screen. Select Garmin Device as your save option, then click Next.

The software should automatically detect your connected GPS. If it does not, click Find Device.

Note: You can also choose to save the files directly to an SD card inserted into your computer card reader. Step 3: Choose Your Action

Select Install new custom POIs onto your device and click Next.

(This is also the screen you will visit in the future if you ever want to select “Remove all previously installed custom POIs from your device”.) Step 4: Locate Your Source Files

Click Browse and select the dedicated folder you created in Phase 1 (e.g., Garmin Custom POIs). Do not try to select the individual CSV or GPX files inside it; just select the parent folder.

Choose your preferred measurement units (Feet and MPH, or Meters and KPH). Step 5: Choose Express or Manual Mode

Express Mode (Recommended): This automatically imports all data using the default settings. It is the fastest option for standard address lists.

Manual Mode: Choose this if your files contain speed limit or proximity alert data (like speed camera locations). Manual mode allows you to specify the exact distance or speed threshold required to trigger an alert on your device. Step 6: Complete the Transfer

Click Next. The software will process the files and display a confirmation message showing how many custom POIs were successfully copied to your device. Click Finish to close the program. Phase 3: Access the POIs on Your Garmin

Safely eject the USB cable from your computer and power on your Garmin GPS device. To find your newly uploaded locations:

Tap Where To? (or Search on newer models) from the main menu. Scroll down and select Categories.

Scroll to the bottom of the categories list and tap Custom POIs.

Select your specific POI file name to browse your uploaded destinations. Troubleshooting Common Errors

“File Not Found” or Zero POIs Loaded: Ensure your CSV or GPX files are placed directly inside the folder you selected. The software cannot read subfolders.

Invalid Coordinates: If your POIs show up in the wrong hemisphere, double-check your longitude values. In North America, longitude coordinates must be negative numbers.

Icons Not Displaying: Ensure your .bmp image is saved in 8-bit or 24-bit color depth, and verify that the file name matches your data file character-for-character.

If you want to update your custom lists later, simply modify the files inside your computer’s POI folder and run the POI Loader software again. The software will automatically overwrite the old data on your device with your updated files. To help you get your files set up correctly, let me know: What operating system (Windows or Mac) are you using?

What type of locations (clients, campsites, speed cameras) are you trying to upload?
